COVID Remote Shoot Work

Production has always had its challenges, but 2020 has certainly thrown us some curve balls. In 2020 with COVID-19 everyone has started to rethink how Productions can be done. Below are the projects that were shot remotely during the Pandemic.

The Stars of Spongebob Fan Favorite Special

At the beginning of Covid, the question became how can new content be created when . people can’t go too set and we can’t send crew into talent’s homes. One of the solutions became filming people over Zoom. Created in the beginning of the 2020 Pandemic the Stars of Spongebob Fan Favorite Special had fans vote on their favorite scenes and then got the cast together to reenact all of those scenes.

With a new platform Matt dove in and figured out the best way to film the talent over Zoom, and how to safely guarantee that we would get the footage we needed which included managing a team of twenty people recording the various angles we needed. In addition Matt set up a system that would allow for recording multiple rooms simultaneously, allowing for maximum efficiency. The result is a unique Spongebob Episode that elevated the standard Zoom episodes the populated the air at that time.

Summer IDs 2020 - Show Specific and Generic

A truly unique shoot for a unique time, the Summer Image shoot is proof positive that even in difficult situations, creative content can still be achieved. Talent was cast and filmed all remotely. In order to achieve this Matt got onto Zoom with each of the talent and walked them through set up. The footage was shot on talent’s personal devices and then sent to Nickelodeon for edit. Matt and the creative Producers monitored and directed the shoot over Zoom to ensure we were getting the footage we needed. Matt shot with 15 talent over the course of 10 days.

Astronauts Fall Premiers 2020 - Nickelodeon Talent String Out

Part of the Fall Premiers Talent Shoot, this String Out was made from the spots highlighting the cast of the upcoming Ron Howard show The Astronauts, premiering on Nickelodeon in the Fall of 2020. Filmed in Canada, this shoot presented with a number of tricky logistics Matt solved to ensure a smooth international Covid Safe Shoot with overlapping shoots happening across two days.

Spongebob’s Spookiest Scene Countdown Special

As Covid continued, new creative ways to film have to be thought up. After the success of the Stars of Spongebob Fan Favorite special, the creative team was tasked to create another Spongebob clip show. The clip show was originally going to be hosted by a voiceover, but after some creative solutions Matt was able to come up with a Covid safe way to elevate the clip show to be hosted by Patchy Pirate.

Matt hired talent’s son, who had never worked on a set previously and along with an internal Director of Photography walked our one man crew member through turning a normal room in their home into a room lived in by a pirate. In addition to having a set, the production also had a teleprompter (controlled remotely), and a video village that the producers could view what the camera was seeing in real time to create a Spongebob special that looks like it was done in a non-pandemic time.

Fall IDs 2020 - Nickelodeon Talent String Out

After the success of the Summer IDs there was a desire to do the same but with some of the talent from Nickelodeon’s current series. This unprecedented shoot was a true logistical achievement, taking place with 16 talent in 2 countries, 3 time zones, and over the course of 10 days. For this project Matt worked with the internal tech team to build out five camera packages that consisted of iPhones, ring lights, mics, and laptops - all of which were preset to make setup go smoother with the Nick talent. In addition to the shoots itself Matt also managed post-production for the 40+ deliverables.

Unfiltered Fall Premiers 2020 - Nickelodeon Talent String Out

Part of the Fall Premiers Talent Shoot, this String Out was made from the spots highlighting the cast of the upcoming Nickelodeon show Unfiltered, starring SNL’s Jay Pharoh, and All That’s Gabriella Nevaeh Green and Lex Lumpkin. Filmed in LA over two days, the team was able to capture not only these spots but also spots for Social platforms, Youtube, and more.
